Power Outages Affect Thousands and Train Cancellations in Britain Due to Storm “Dara”
A warning was issued for millions in the United Kingdom to stay indoors, as power outages affected thousands and train services were canceled with the “life-threatening” alert activated due to Storm “Dara.”
According to the British news agency PA Media, the emergency alert came into effect at 1 AM GMT on Saturday for those under the rare red warning issued by the UK Met Office for wind in parts of Wales and South West England.
This was the largest use of the warning system, urging people to avoid driving and “stay indoors as much as possible.”
Power was cut to thousands of people in Northern Ireland, England, and Wales as they braced for the storm’s impact, according to the German news agency DPA.
By 5 AM, the National Grid reported that more than 12,600 buildings were without power in the Midlands and South West of the country, with more than 20,000 homes in Wales also affected.
Storm “Dara” had already caused dozens of flights to be canceled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Friday.
