Slot After Victory Over PSG: They Were Better Than Us

Arne Slot, Liverpool’s coach, admitted that Paris Saint-Germain outperformed his team in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Despite an emotional last-minute victory for the English club, he noted that their performance must significantly improve in the return leg at Anfield.

Substitute Harvey Elliott scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, just 47 seconds after coming on, to give the visiting team a 1-0 win, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker playing a crucial role in helping them survive PSG’s relentless attacks.

Liverpool will host the return leg next Tuesday, and Slot stated that PSG is still in the competition.

He added: “If you look at the result, you’ll see we came away with a very positive outcome, but if you look at the performance, we are talking about two different things. I think PSG will come into the second leg next week strong after delivering an excellent performance.”

Slot emphasized that support from the Anfield crowd will be key against PSG next week and also against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

He said: “We don’t have a winter break in England, so we keep playing for several months already, and the team certainly needs the support of our fans as they have in recent months.”

The Dutch coach also praised attacking midfielder Elliott (21) and forward Darwin Núñez from Uruguay.

Slot said: “It’s a big moment for him (Elliott)… he competes with players I rarely substitute. So, he has to do it in limited playing minutes, but he didn’t disappoint me.

Harvey wasn’t the only reason for this win; it was also thanks to Darwin, who returned after two difficult matches but was present strongly again tonight because, from the moment he came on, we became a bigger threat to the opponent.”
