Jibril Discusses Facilitating Return of Displaced Persons with UN Official

Minister of Finance Dr. Jibril Ibrahim held a high-level meeting with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in Washington on the sidelines of the Spring Meetings. They discussed urgent humanitarian and economic challenges currently facing Sudan.

The meeting covered several critical issues, notably the urgent humanitarian needs of the population, ways to facilitate the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons, and the government’s ongoing efforts to achieve economic stability amid escalating challenges.

During the meeting, Jibril reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to supporting displaced communities and ensuring their dignified return, emphasizing the importance of partnership with international organizations, particularly the IOM, in implementing humanitarian and development programs.

The two sides also discussed technical and logistical arrangements for the government’s return to functioning from the capital, Khartoum, as a pivotal step towards promoting national unity and administrative efficiency.

The meeting also addressed the potential repercussions of U.S. aid cuts to Sudan. Both sides expressed deep concern over the negative impacts this could have on humanitarian programs and the country’s economic stability.

For her part, Amy Pope reaffirmed the IOM’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with the Sudanese government and working jointly to meet urgent needs and develop sustainable solutions for displaced populations and communities affected by conflict. She also expressed her intention to visit Sudan at the earliest opportunity.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding on the importance of enhancing coordination and continuous cooperation with international partners to support recovery efforts, stability, and sustainable development in Sudan.
