UN Warns of Imminent Floods in Sudan

The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan as the rainy season approaches, with imminent flooding expected to hinder relief efforts and increase health risks, according to the “This Morning” website.

In a statement issued by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN expressed concern that the anticipated flooding in Sudan—likely to continue through October—could cut off access to affected areas.

The statement emphasized that the floods may obstruct the delivery of essential aid to millions of people at a time when humanitarian organizations face severe funding shortages, limiting their ability to pre-position supplies ahead of the rainy season.

The report noted that last year’s floods affected around half a million people and warned that the number of affected individuals this year could be even higher due to continued mass displacement caused by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF militia.

The United Nations indicated that the armed conflict has displaced more than 12 million people since April 2023, further compounding the country’s fragile humanitarian situation.
