Energy Minister Outlines Vision to Revive the Sector at Russian Energy Week

Speaking at the 8th Russian Energy Week in Moscow, Sudan’s Minister of Energy, Engineer Adviser Al-Mutasim Ibrahim Ahmed, unveiled a comprehensive strategy to rebuild and modernize the country’s national energy sector, which has been severely damaged by the war waged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their local and international allies.

The minister said the plan aims to restore oil and gas production in war-affected areas, enhance operational reliability across all stages of the petroleum industry, and expand power generation capacity. It also seeks to integrate modern technologies in grid management to support national reconstruction efforts.

Al-Mutasim emphasized that “the cornerstone of our strategy is reliance on national expertise, which has sustained essential operations despite the immense challenges.” He highlighted major investments in advanced technical training and professional certification programs to equip local cadres to manage next-generation energy systems.

Addressing the issue of brain drain, the minister announced a plan to establish specialized institutes for energy technology and research, in partnership with universities and the private sector, to develop programs focused on energy systems and renewable energy.

He further stressed that “oil and gas exploration and production remain vital pillars,” noting that the government is working to rehabilitate existing oil fields and attract international investment, while gradually transitioning toward renewable energy and cleaner combustion technologies.

Concluding his remarks, the minister called on the international community to join Sudan’s “reconstruction journey” through partnerships in knowledge transfer, joint research, and the exchange of expertise to build an energy sector that supports the country’s economic recovery.

The Russian Energy Week is one of the world’s largest international forums dedicated to the energy sector, bringing together government officials and experts from around the globe to discuss the future of global energy.
