Sudan Urges UN Human Rights Council to Label RSF a Terrorist Organization

On Friday, the UN Human Rights Council held a consultative session in Geneva, chaired by Swiss Permanent Representative Ambassador Jürg Lauber, to discuss arrangements for an emergency session on the situation in El Fasher, scheduled for Friday, November 14.

During the session, the UK’s Deputy Permanent Representative outlined the motivations behind calling for the special meeting — a joint initiative by the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway — reflecting growing international concern over escalating atrocities in Darfur.

Ambassador Hassan Hamid, Sudan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, urged the sponsors of the draft resolution to include three key provisions:

1. Designation of the RSF as a terrorist organization,

2. Rejection of any equivalence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF in UN statements, and

3. Explicit condemnation of states and entities providing support to the RSF.

These developments come amid mounting international pressure to hold perpetrators accountable for atrocities in El Fasher and to forge a unified global response to escalating violence against civilians.
