Sudan and Turkey Agree to Boost Economic Partnership as Ankara Considers Debt Relief

Sudan’s Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Mohamed Nour Abdel Daem, met with the Governor of the Central Bank of Turkey, Dr. Fatih Karahan, in Istanbul.

The meeting discussed developments in Sudan’s economic situation following the war, as well as ongoing efforts aimed at reconstruction and restoring financial stability.

During the talks, the Minister presented a detailed briefing on the challenges currently facing the Sudanese economy, highlighting widespread destruction of infrastructure—including bridges, hospitals, schools, and power and water facilities—along with the severe damage sustained by the banking sector. He outlined the requirements for reconstruction and pointed to the formation of a new civilian government in Sudan, stressing the importance of Turkish support in strengthening institutional and financial capacities and improving the efficiency of economic agencies.

The two sides also explored opportunities for cooperation in the minerals sector, particularly gold, including support for refining processes in line with international standards and efforts to obtain global certification that would allow Sudan to enter markets more competitively.

Both parties affirmed their commitment to enhancing economic partnership between Sudan and Turkey. The Turkish Central Bank Governor expressed full solidarity with Sudan, pledging support—particularly in technical assistance and training—and promised to look into resolving outstanding debts. He also affirmed continued coordination to support Sudan’s efforts to overcome the impacts of war and build a sustainable economy.
