The United Nations’ Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Chaloka Beyani, stated that the world is witnessing serious violations of international human rights law, direct attacks on civilians, and blatant disregard for international humanitarian law. He added that “the risk of atrocities, or indeed their occurrence, is extremely high.”
The UN official highlighted the worsening violence in Sudan, noting that the conflict in the Darfur region—investigated by a UN commission for the first time in the 1990s—continues to escalate decades later.
According to UN News, Beyani warned of a troubling decline in respect for international law worldwide, with conflicts increasingly targeting civilians and raising the risk of mass atrocity crimes.
