United Nations: More Than 10,000 Displaced in Sudan Over Three Days

Report – Sudan Events
The United Nations said that more than 10,000 people have been displaced over the course of three days in Sudan’s North Darfur and South Kordofan states, amid the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
On Sunday, the UN-affiliated International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 7,000 people had fled the towns of Umm Baru and Kornoi in North Darfur, which were taken over by the RSF days earlier.
The organization also said that more than 3,000 people in South Kordofan had fled the city of Kadugli, which is besieged by the RSF and controlled by the army, while residents continue to suffer from famine conditions.
Also in South Kordofan, fires destroyed 45 shelters for displaced people after breaking out in the Abu Jubeiha area.
Insecurity
In separate statements, the IOM said displacement figures are rising rapidly in North and South Kordofan states in southern Sudan due to the “worsening security situation.”
The organization reported that its field displacement teams recorded the displacement of 780 people from the city of Al-Dilling in South Kordofan between last Wednesday and Friday, citing escalating insecurity.
It also estimated that 510 people were displaced from the village of Al-Sanjoqi, in Umm Dam Haj Ahmed locality in North Kordofan, due to security conditions, noting that the situation in the area remains highly tense and volatile.
Escalating Fighting
Fighting has intensified in Kordofan’s cities in recent months, particularly after the RSF consolidated control over the entire neighboring Darfur region by capturing the city of El Fasher in October.
On Wednesday, the RSF announced that it had taken control of the towns of Abu Qamra and Umm Baru in North Darfur. Local sources told Agence France-Presse that RSF fighters were advancing toward areas inhabited by the Zaghawa tribe along Sudan’s northwestern border, amid escalating clashes in the region.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls the five Darfur states in the west, with the exception of parts of North Darfur that remain under army control. The Sudanese army maintains influence over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.
Record Displacement
On December 18, the IOM announced that the number of displaced people across the three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—ranged between 50,000 and 445,000 during the period from October 26 to December 17.
The three Kordofan states have witnessed fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF for weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands in recent weeks.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to deepen as a result of the war that erupted in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced 13 million people.
