Standards Authority: Reconstruction Is a Real Opportunity to Embed Quality Principles

The Director General of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization, Rahba Saeed Abdullah, said the reconstruction phase represents a genuine opportunity to entrench principles of quality and compliance with standards across various productive and service sectors, describing them as a cornerstone for building a strong and sustainable national economy.

She called on producers, importers, and traders to adhere to standard specifications and respect consumer rights, stressing that this is a shared national responsibility.

In a message marking World Consumer Rights Day, held under the slogan “Safe Products… Confident Consumers,” Abdullah renewed the organization’s commitment to raising public awareness and strengthening partnerships with government institutions, civil society organizations, and the media.

She emphasized that an informed consumer represents the first line of defense in protecting markets, and that enforcing consumer rights is essential for achieving economic justice and sustainable development in Sudan.

Abdullah noted that the observance of World Consumer Rights Day provides an important opportunity to reaffirm commitments to consumer protection and to promote a culture of quality and safety in the marketplace.

She added that the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization places consumer protection at the top of its priorities and continues to enforce standard specifications and monitor goods and services to ensure their safety and quality.

According to Abdullah, this year’s observance comes amid exceptional circumstances facing the country due to the repercussions of war, which has increased the responsibility of regulatory institutions to safeguard citizens’ rights and protect them from substandard goods and practices harmful to the national economy.

She said the organization has continued to carry out its regulatory and technical role throughout the war period with professionalism and responsibility by intensifying inspection campaigns, monitoring markets, seizing non-compliant goods, and coordinating closely with relevant authorities to ensure the availability of safe and standards-compliant products that protect consumers’ health and safety.
