AU Renews Call to End Conflict in Sudan

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki, expressed his growing concern about the deteriorating security situation in Sudan, particularly reports of renewed attacks on the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people in El Fasher, as well as the extension of fighting to Wad Madani in Gezira State.
Faki indicated, through a statement issued by the AUC on Monday, that the renewed fighting there reopens the painful wounds of many Darfur residents who have lived for the past twenty years in Abu Shouk as a place of refuge.
On the other hand, the head of the commission said that the attacks on Wad Madani in central Sudan opened a new front in the Sudanese war, which has now entered its ninth month. In recent months, Wad Madani has received millions of Sudanese civilians who fled the fighting in Khartoum, many of whom are forced to flee for the second time since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023.
The Chairperson of the Commission renewed the call on the warring parties, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, to immediately cease hostilities and participate meaningfully in negotiations aimed at building and sustaining peace in Sudan.
He stressed the readiness of the African Union to continue working with key national stakeholders and regional and global actors, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States and the United Nations, in order to reach a rapid solution to the conflict in Sudan.
