FIFA: Brazil Suspension Over Confederation

FIFA has warned Brazil it could suspend its national teams and clubs from international competitions
if the intervention of the Brazilian Football Confederation leads to the election of a new president of the federation next January.
FIFA said in a letter to a Brazilian football executive that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) could face suspension if it did not respond to FIFA’s call to wait and insisted on holding a quick election to replace Edinaldo Rodriguez. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.
A court in Rio de Janeiro dismissed Rodriguez and all those appointed to the Brazilian Confederation from their positions on December 7, due to irregularities in his election last year. The two highest courts in Brazil upheld this ruling last week.
FIFA has historically rejected government and third-party interference in member federations, which could ultimately lead to five-time World Cup winner Brazil being removed from major competitions until the crisis is resolved.
The Rio court judge identified José Perdez, president of Brazil’s highest sports court, as an intervenor in organizing new presidential elections within 30 working days. FIFA said in previous letters to the Brazilian Federation that it considered the intervention unjustified.
FIFA and the South American Football Confederation also said in the letter that they would form a committee to discuss the matter in Brazil on January 8.
