The Argentine national team returned from the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, with a historic victory over the hosts, with an unanswered goal, at the Maracana Stadium, in the sixth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The only goal of the match was scored by Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi in the 63rd minute.
According to the Opta statistics network, the Argentine national team is the first team to break Brazil’s power and defeat it on its soil in the World Cup qualifiers, after 64 consecutive matches without losing (51 wins and 13 draws).
The network added that not in 14 years had a team succeeded in preventing the Brazilian national team from scoring at home in the South American qualifiers (0-0 against Venezuela in 2009).
