UNICEF: film on ending child marriage
Agencies – Sudan Events
UNICEF has launched an original short dramata video that sheds light on child marriage in South Sudan, and champions children’s rights in the country.
The short uplifting music video follows the intertwining stories of young married girls and their alternate futures, such as going to school, playing with friends, and finding employment if they were not married as children.
The film features music by South Sudanese music producer Dynamq and the voices of South Sudan music track ‘Eyal Del’.
The video is part of UNICEF’s ongoing efforts to protect the rights of children in South Sudan and across Africa.
Child marriage is a tragic reality for both girls and boys, but it disproportionately affects girls, especially in South Sudan, and deprives them of their basic rights and, for some, even their lives. Over half of all girls are married before 18 years of age in South Sudan—one of the highest rates in the world.
UNICEF is working with the Government of South Sudan to implement the National Strategic Action Plan (2017–2030) to end child marriage by 2030. Together with partners, UNICEF South Sudan is promoting positive social norms through community and youth programmes, education, community engagement, and engaging political, religious, and community leaders whose commitment is an essential part of ending the harmful practice in South Sudan.
On November 24th, the short film will be broadcast to viewers and will be followed in December and January 2024 (for the upcoming campaign) by additional content, including animations, documentaries, and an influencer film featuring stories and clear messages that marriage is not for children.
