The Cannes Film Festival opened on Tuesday night with the presentation of the honorary Palme d’Or to Meryl Streep and honoring the president of the jury, Greta Gerwig, with the launch of the 77th edition of the French Riviera Festival.
French actress Juliette Binoche burst into tears as she handed the honorary Palme d’Or to the beloved Hollywood icon, who made her first appearance at Cannes in 35 years.
Streep, who received the first long applause at the festival, said, “I am very grateful and thank you very much.” as she could not hide her tears.
Together, she and Binoche declared the Cannes Film Festival officially open.
Streep is among a host of Hollywood stars flocking to the Riviera for the festival, which runs until May 25, including the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas and Kevin Costner.
The opening ceremony was followed by a screening of French director Quentin Dupieux’s latest comedy film, “The Second Act”, starring Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lyndon, Louis Garrel and rising star Raphaël Coignard.
Over the next two weeks, Cannes will premiere anticipated new films from the likes of Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and George.
