Ipswich’s Victory Over Chelsea: A Milestone for Fans

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna praised his team after a memorable night, where they secured their first home victory in the Premier League in over two decades. He pointed to more wins on the horizon for the relegation-threatened club.
Liam Delap and former Chelsea player Omari Hutchinson scored in Monday’s match, giving Ipswich their first Premier League home win since defeating Middlesbrough in April 2002.
This is just Ipswich’s third win of the season, but it lifted them to 18th place, above Leicester City. They remain in the relegation zone, only one point away from safety. However, McKenna believes better days are ahead.
“The season is halfway through, and we’ve been competitive in most of our matches. We just need some small improvements to win more games. We’re a humble group with confidence in ourselves,” McKenna said.
He added that beating a top team like Chelsea was something to savor.
“Beating Chelsea was brilliant. For most fans who have been coming to the stadium for 22 years, every moment here is a milestone for them. Winning a game at home is another special milestone. But I think this time of year, the match, and the opponent made it a special night, and I want everyone to enjoy it as much as they can.”
The 38-year-old coach, who led the club through their rise to the Premier League, said that the win against Chelsea capped off a remarkable year.
“Everyone connected to Ipswich can enjoy this Tuesday night and remember the games we’ve played and the moments we’ve had over the last two years. I don’t want to dwell too much on the past, but I think six of today’s starting players were with us in League One, so this is the journey this group has been on.”
The players will return to training on Wednesday ahead of their trip to Fulham on Sunday.
“When you experience moments like these, you have to rest a bit and enjoy before moving on to the next step,” said McKenna.
