UN Official: Attacks on Civilians in Sudan Must End Immediately

Sudan Events – Reports

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on all parties involved in the Sudan conflict to take urgent measures to protect civilians and uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

The UN official stated that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue unabated. In El Fasher, North Darfur, the Abu Shouk displaced persons camp was shelled once again, resulting in the deaths of nine civilians, including two women and a child, while at least 12 others were injured when the camp was bombarded on January 29.

In a previous incident, a drone strike attributed to the RSF killed at least 67 people and injured 19 others at the Saudi Maternity Hospital in El Fasher. The attack severely damaged the emergency unit, rendering it inoperative.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also expressed deep concern over reports of summary executions of civilians in Khartoum Bahri.

“The deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are appalling and must stop immediately. Incitement to violence against civilians must also cease. Such attacks constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes,” the UN official stated.
