UN Security Council Condemns Militia Attacks on El Fasher

Sudan Events – Agencies

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of El Fasher in Darfur and has called for an immediate ceasefire between the warring parties in Sudan.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, council members expressed their deep concern over the escalating violence, particularly in El Fasher and its surrounding areas.

They also strongly denounced the ongoing and intensifying RSF attacks on El Fasher in recent days, as well as reports of an assault on the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher on January 24, which resulted in the deaths of over 70 patients receiving medical care. The hospital was the last functioning medical facility in Darfur’s largest city.

The Security Council further urged the RSF to lift the siege on El Fasher, a demand it had previously made in a 2024 resolution but to no avail.

Additionally, the council reiterated its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties in the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians. It also voiced particular concern over the humanitarian situation in El Fasher and the neighboring Zamzam displacement camp.

The statement, released yesterday, called on all UN member states to refrain from any external intervention that could fuel the conflict or destabilize the region and to adhere to the arms embargo imposed on Darfur.
