Northern State Issues New Mining Regulations

Sudan Events – Reports

The Governor of Northern State, Abdeen Awadallah, has issued a temporary decree banning the use of thiourea, mixers, and other processing methods in traditional and unregulated mining operations within the state.

The decree also prohibits the operation of wind-powered mills outside the designated working hours, which are from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Additionally, the decree restricts any entity from granting mining permits without prior approval from the Ministry of Minerals or the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company.

The governor has also issued another decree prohibiting the transportation of mining waste from the state to other states or between localities within the state without a license from the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company. The decree emphasizes that transportation must be conducted using securely sealed vehicles to prevent contamination of water sources, agricultural lands, and the environment.

Furthermore, all traditional mining operators in the state must adhere to environmental and safety regulations when conducting mining activities within mining markets. They must obtain a permit or prior approval from the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company before trading in traditional mining waste (known as “karta”).

The decree also bans the introduction, operation, or participation in the use of ball mills (Ball Mill) or their accessories (balls, iron, motors). Additionally, storing “karta” outside designated traditional mining markets or licensed company sites is strictly prohibited under the regulatory framework.
