Official: Thousands of Bodies Moved from Streets to Cemeteries in Khartoum

An official from the Ministry of Health in Khartoum State reported that the Forensic Medicine Authority has transferred thousands of bodies from the streets and homes and buried them in cemeteries across the state.

Hisham Zain Al-Abidin, head of the Forensic Medicine Authority, stated in a press release that “the authority’s teams transported and buried 3,800 bodies in various cemeteries during the conflict and after the army declared control over Khartoum.”

He explained that following the army’s takeover of the capital, the authority received reports about bodies found in homes, public squares in residential neighborhoods, health facilities, government ministries, and universities.

Zain Al-Abidin noted that the authorities formed a committee comprising the forensic medicine department, the executive director of Omdurman locality, and security agencies to document cemeteries in all neighborhoods of old Omdurman.

Authorities discovered hundreds of mass graves in Khartoum State, most believed to be victims of enforced disappearances, torture, and mass killings committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their control of Khartoum.

The Ministry of Health in Khartoum State affirmed that the Forensic Medicine Authority is solely responsible for receiving reports regarding corpses in the state and for managing all morgues.

The authority denied receiving a report from a woman in Al-Douha neighborhood in Omdurman regarding the transportation of her son’s body from their home in exchange for four million Sudanese pounds.

The ministry stated that the committee responsible for body transfers in Omdurman, led by the Forensic Medicine Authority, carries out its duties free of charge.
