On Monday, Prime Minister Kamel Idris issued an urgent appeal to the UN Secretary-General, urging the Security Council and General Assembly to lift the siege on Al-Fashir, open humanitarian corridors to deliver aid, and prevent the use of starvation as a weapon against civilians.
According to the Sudan News Agency, Idris said in his message: “I stand before you today with an urgent and painful plea. The city of Al-Fashir is under siege. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped. Families are starving, and children are dying before our eyes due to a lack of global resources, or worse, deliberate obstruction.”
He stressed that the situation in Al-Fashir is not merely a humanitarian crisis but a moral test for the United Nations, pointing out that international law prohibits using starvation as a weapon of war and that the rights to life, food, and medical care are fundamental human rights. “Yet these rights are being violated in Al-Fashir with every passing hour,” he added.
The Prime Minister called on the UN Security Council and General Assembly to act immediately to lift the siege and open humanitarian pathways, emphasizing: “The residents of Al-Fashir cannot wait for further procedural discussions or delayed resolutions. Their survival depends on your urgent and unified action.”
He continued: “History will remember whether the United Nations chose silence or solidarity, and whether it allowed an entire city to perish or stood firmly to protect the innocent.”
