The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur reported that cholera deaths in the region have risen to 500, after 17 additional deaths were recorded Tuesday.
Spokesman Adam Regal said in the group’s regular update that 135 new cholera cases were confirmed Tuesday alone, bringing the cumulative total since the outbreak began in June to 12,061 cases, including 500 deaths.
The hardest-hit areas include Jebel Marra and Zalingei in Central Darfur, Tawila in North Darfur, Nyala and surrounding IDP camps in South Darfur, and Khashm El-Girba in East Darfur, where the disease has spread at unprecedented levels.
Regal noted that most affected areas suffer from acute shortages of IV fluids and other essential supplies. He added that the fight against the outbreak faces major challenges due to rising infection rates, compounded by malaria, child malnutrition, and hunger.
