The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on Friday strongly condemned the recent drone attacks targeting vital electricity facilities and civilian infrastructure in several Sudanese states.
A statement issued by the conference attributed the attacks to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), saying they targeted Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, Gedaref, River Nile, and Red Sea states.
According to the statement, obtained by Ultra Sudan, the attacks caused extensive damage to electricity infrastructure, forcing numerous power facilities out of service and disrupting electricity supplies across large parts of the country.
“These developments further exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation and expose millions of civilians to additional suffering,” the statement added.
The conference expressed deep concern over the consequences of these attacks for civilian populations, particularly their impact on access to essential services, including electricity, water supplies, healthcare, and education.
It stated that disruptions to energy infrastructure threaten the operation of hospitals, water treatment systems, telecommunications networks, and other vital public services, while also undermining economic and productive activities.
The statement described the attacks as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, noting that international law prohibits the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure that does not constitute a military objective, adding that such acts “constitute a war crime.”
The conference called for the protection of critical infrastructure throughout Sudan, reaffirming its “unwavering” support for safeguarding the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan, as well as preserving its national institutions and resources.
The statement went on to say: “The Conference stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and calls upon the international community and regional and international organizations to intensify their efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Sudan and support initiatives aimed at restoring peace, stability, and security in the country.”
