Revealing the refereeing team for the opening match of the Asian Cup
The Asian Football Confederation revealed on Wednesday the refereeing team for the opening match of the Asian Cup the day after tomorrow, Friday, at Lusail Stadium.
Iranian Ali Reza Faghani, who is considered one of the most famous referees in Asian matches, has been appointed to officiate the upcoming Group A match between defending champions Qatar and Lebanon, which will start at 7 pm in a stadium with a capacity of 88,000 spectators.
While the Australian duo Anton Schetinen and Ashley Warwick Beecham were appointed as assistant referees, while the South Korean duo Ko Hyung-jin and Yoon Jae-yeol will be the fourth referee and reserve assistant referee, respectively.
Australian Evan Shaun Robert will be the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), while compatriot Kate Jasiewicz will become the first female referee ever to participate in an Asian Cup match when she assumes her role as VAR assistant.
Faghani will officiate his 13th match in the Asian Cup in his fourth appearance in the tournament, after he officiated as fourth referee for four matches in his first appearance in 2011, and also officiated five matches in 2015.
Faghani won the Best Referee Award in Asia in 2016 and 2018.
He began his refereeing journey in 1994 and became a referee with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in 2008.
