Vice President of Sudanese Sovereignty Council: Thursday’s Jeddah Negotiations Resumption of Previous Rounds

Agencies – Sudan Events

Malik Aqar, Vice President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, said that the next round of the Jeddah negotiating platform between the Sudanese army and the rebel Rapid Support militia will only concern implementing what was previously agreed upon.

He said in statements to the Arab World News Agency (AWP) monitored by “Sudan Events” today, Monday, “It is a round related to implementing what was previously agreed upon in Jeddah… There is no new agenda in the Jeddah platform, but rather, it is one item: implementing what was agreed upon.
Agar stressed that what will happen on Thursday is merely a “resumption.”
Agar said that the sponsors of the Jeddah platform (Saudi Arabia and the United States) “saw that it was possible to resume these negotiations” now, noting that the negotiations had stopped last June for reasons he described as objective.

Regarding the extent of his optimism about the success of the new round of negotiations, Aqar said, “All parties go to negotiations optimistic… When you go to the negotiating table, you go optimistic about its success. Otherwise, there is no good reason to be at that table.”
Yesterday, Sunday, the Deputy Commander of the Sudanese Army, Shams al-Din Kabbashi, announced that the armed forces had received an invitation to return to the Jeddah podium next Thursday.
The announcement of a return to the Jeddah negotiations comes more than six months after the outbreak of war between the army and the Rapid Support on April 15.
