Official: We Want to Achieve Peace Sooner Rather Than Later

Sudan Events – Agencies
A senior government official told Sudan Tribune on Friday that the government and the people are eager to achieve peace sooner rather than later, but “not in the hasty and shallow manner proposed by the U.S. envoy, which doesn’t contribute to actual peacebuilding.”
The official anticipated that the envoy would deny the statements he made two days earlier regarding his communications with the African Union to prepare for the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Sudan.
He added, “The envoy might have spoken about matters not intended for public dissemination, but the government is awaiting either confirmation or denial as these statements are currently under review.”
The U.S. envoy had criticized the Sudanese military during a meeting with civil groups, claiming, “The army has become increasingly hostile and extreme in opposing the return to a civilian democratic system and is clearly pushing the country back toward another era of military rule.”
