Waleed Shammalan Al-Bahar, Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, announced the resumption of the fund’s activities in Sudan following the war. He expressed hope for stability in Sudan soon and confirmed their desire to find solutions for the arrears issue. During his meeting with Sudan’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim Mohamed, on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings currently held in Washington, Shammalan reaffirmed the fund’s commitment to supporting development in Arab nations experiencing conflicts, such as Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, and Sudan. Shammalan also highlighted cooperation on project implementation through an MoU with the UK to provide aid through UN organizations, including UNICEF, UNESCO, and the WHO, and affirmed their readiness to participate in reconstruction projects.
Minister of Finance Dr. Jibril Ibrahim stressed no objections to implementing projects through UN organizations, noting the need for coordination and consultation with the government for their execution. He emphasized the need for the fund to focus on healthcare. The minister praised the substantial support provided by the government and people of Kuwait to Sudan in the current extraordinary circumstances, especially in humanitarian aid and life-saving medicine. Both parties agreed that the fund would continue its support to Sudan, particularly in humanitarian areas, and collaborate on joint projects through UN organizations as a third party, prioritizing health and education according to agreed-upon priorities.
