Tunisian Statements on “Borders” Cause Discontent in Libya

Statements by Tunisian Defense Minister Khaled Al-Suhaili about the borders with Libya, in which he said, “Our country has not and will not allow relinquishing any part of its national territory,” have caused discontent among Libyan officials who emphasized that “this matter has been completely resolved for a decade.”

During his presentation of the Ministry of Defense’s budget before parliament last Tuesday, Al-Suhaili added that “border demarcation is carried out through a joint Tunisian-Libyan committee.”

In response to Al-Suhaili’s remarks, the Government of National Unity, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, announced through its Foreign Ministry that the matter of delineating the Libyan-Tunisian border “has been resolved through a joint committee between the two countries and has since become a stable and settled issue that is not up for discussion or reconsideration.”

The two countries share a border of 459 kilometers, with two crossing points: Ras Ajdir and Wazzin-Dhiba.
