Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Considers Forming Women’s Basketball Team

Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is reportedly planning to propose the creation of a new women’s basketball team to compete in the WNBA, over 20 years after the city’s previous team folded.
According to Agence France-Presse, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed optimism about expanding the league to 16 teams by 2028. She recently announced that Toronto and Portland would join the league in 2026, with Golden State Valkyries set to debut next season.
A CNBC report highlighted that Gilbert’s proposal comes amid growing interest in women’s basketball, driven by the outstanding performances of rising stars.
Neither the WNBA nor Rock Entertainment Group, owned by Gilbert, responded to requests for comment.
Cleveland’s previous women’s basketball team, the Cleveland Rockers, folded in 2003 due to poor attendance, according to the team’s former owner.
