Finance Minister: Sudan Is Living on Oil Lakes

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
The Minister of Finance and National Economy, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, acknowledged that certain critical areas, such as the oil sector, had not received sufficient focus during the Economic Forum.
Speaking at the forum’s closing session on Wednesday evening, he emphasized the need to develop Sudan’s oil production, describing it as a quick revenue source the country desperately needs. He noted that Sudan’s oil production before the secession of South Sudan—which he described as “tragic”—was approximately 500,000 barrels per day. This dropped to 120,000 barrels post-secession and has now plummeted to just 21,000 barrels per day.
“We have fallen far behind while the rest of the world is advancing,” he said.
Dr. Jibril stressed the need for significant efforts to improve oil production in Sudan, remarking, “We are living on oil lakes.” He warned against complacency in utilizing this resource, adding, “If we do not take advantage of it now, oil will have little value 20 years from now.” He urged increased attention and investment in the oil sector.
