Putin Ready for Negotiations Reflecting “New Realities on the Ground”

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his annual press conference on Thursday, emphasized that Russia has overcome the impact of Western sanctions and achieved continuous economic growth over the past two years. He discussed improvements in living standards in Russia and revitalization in previously neglected sectors.
While journalists at the five-hour event focused heavily on economic and social issues, the spotlight remained on the war in Ukraine and potential diplomatic paths once U.S. President-elect Donald Trump assumes office next month.
A Triumphant Tone
Putin expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with Trump if the latter desires. He stated his readiness for “serious negotiations” on Ukraine and spoke with a tone of confidence, asserting that Russia had made significant advances on the ground this year while introducing advanced military technologies like the “Orichnik” missile, which he claimed the West has no equivalent or defense against.
Putin highlighted Russia’s ability to counter Western defenses, emphasizing: “There is no chance of intercepting the Orichnik missile… Let them concentrate their missile defenses in one spot and see what happens.”
Russia’s Allies” in Ukraine
Putin mentioned Western troop movements near Belarus, Russia’s closest ally, and warned that any threat to Belarus equates to a threat to Russia. He added that Russia could engage in negotiations with individuals within Ukraine who align with Russia’s goals, describing them as “our people.”
Putin also expressed a willingness to negotiate with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, provided he gains legitimacy through elections. However, he stressed that any peace process must involve legitimate representatives and noted that earlier peace agreements in Istanbul were derailed due to Western interference.
Negotiations Without Preconditions
Putin affirmed Russia’s readiness for peace talks without preconditions, based on the agreements reached in Istanbul and the “realities on the ground,” which now include the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia.
Military Progress and Resistance to Ceasefires
Putin opposed temporary ceasefires, arguing that they only allow opponents to regroup and recruit more troops. He emphasized the need for a lasting and fair peace that guarantees Russia’s security and sovereignty.
Militarily, he claimed Russian forces were making significant advances, stating: “Our forces are reclaiming territory by the square kilometer, not by the meter.” He dismissed the idea of freezing the conflict, stating that Russia is focused on achieving a sustainable peace.
