Sudan Events – Agencies
The US National Security Council stated that it will monitor the United Arab Emirates to ensure it halts and refrains from arming the Rapid Support Forces militia in Sudan now and in the future.
The National Security Council, which is the highest executive authority on security and military affairs that gathers the President’s advisors on these issues, confirmed that the UAE had assured the US Presidency that it has currently ceased arming the rebellious Rapid Support Forces in Sudan and will not do so in the future.
Brett McGurk, the US Deputy Assistant to the President, wrote a letter to the US Congress on December 18, stating that despite evidence suggesting otherwise, the UAE claims to have stopped arming the militia and will not resume this in the future.
McGurk added that the National Security Council will keep the matter under surveillance to verify the credibility and accuracy of the UAE’s claims.
The National Security Council confirmed that by January 17, a comprehensive report would be submitted to the US Congress regarding the UAE’s commitment to cease arming and supporting the Rapid Support Forces militia.
Senator Van Hollen had sent a letter to President Biden’s office on November 21, 2024, concerning US arms sales to the UAE and the UAE’s involvement in arming the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan.
The Sudanese government has provided conclusive evidence of the UAE’s involvement in supporting and arming the Rapid Support Forces militia, which used these weapons to kill Sudanese civilians in central and western Sudan and force millions of citizens to flee their homes, alongside the destruction of thousands of vital public facilities.
