South Korean Opposition Plans Impeachment of Acting President
South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party announced plans on Tuesday to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, who has been leading the country since President Yoon Suk-yeol was suspended following a failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this month.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Democratic Party parliamentary leader Park Chan-dae accused Han of delaying legislation appointing a special counsel to investigate President Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon-hee.
The Democratic Party, which holds a majority in parliament, has passed a bill authorizing an independent counsel to investigate charges against Yoon, including rebellion, and to probe allegations of bribery involving the First Lady. If Han fails to enact the legislation promptly, the party plans to initiate impeachment proceedings immediately.
Park said, “Delays demonstrate that the Prime Minister has no intention of upholding the constitution. This is equivalent to admitting that he is acting as an agent for the rebels,” referring to President Yoon.
