Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti) under Executive Order (E.O.) 14098 for destabilizing Sudan and undermining the democratic transition.
The U.S. Treasury Department stated, “For nearly two years, Hemeti’s Rapid Support Forces have engaged in brutal armed conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces for control of Sudan, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, the displacement of 12 million Sudanese, and widespread famine.”
The statement also noted that, in addition to sanctions on Hemeti, OFAC imposed sanctions on seven companies and one individual associated with the RSF. “The RSF’s continued ability to access military equipment and generate funding fuels the conflict in Sudan,” the statement added. “Capital Tap Holding L.L.C.,” based in the UAE, has provided funds and weapons to the RSF.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Wally Adeyemo, said, “The U.S. continues to call for an end to this conflict that puts innocent civilian lives at risk.” He added, “The Treasury remains committed to using all available tools to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations against the Sudanese people.”
In this context, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the RSF committed genocide in Darfur during the war.
