Amorim Admits: We Are the Worst Manchester United Team in History
Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim admitted that his struggles with Manchester United mark the worst period in the club’s history after a crushing 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday in the Premier League’s 22nd round.
Manchester United suffered their sixth defeat in 11 league matches under Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman’s dismissal.
Amorim’s side currently sits in 13th place, 10 points clear of the relegation zone but far from ensuring safety amid their poor performances. United’s recent home loss was their sixth of the season, marking their worst record in the first 12 matches since the 1893-94 season.
Having lost 10 out of 22 league matches this season, it is also United’s fastest rate of defeats in a single Premier League campaign since 1989-90, when they ended with 16 losses.
Amorim openly acknowledged the dire situation, saying: “Imagine what this means for a Manchester United fan. Imagine what it means for me. We got a new coach who loses more than the last one. I am fully aware of this.”
He added: “Perhaps we are the worst team in Manchester United’s history. I know you want headlines, so here they are. But I say this because we need to admit it and change it.”
Despite not being entirely in a relegation battle yet, Amorim must find a way to secure results to avoid unbearable pressure. The 39-year-old coach, who joined United in November and is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young managers, has faced difficulty adapting his preferred 3-4-3 system to the current squad.
Although he admitted his immediate focus is avoiding relegation, he refused to change his philosophy: “I won’t change my philosophy no matter what happens. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. I’m not naive. Survival is the priority right now.”
