Sahin: “I’m Optimistic About Dortmund’s Champions League Chances”
Borussia Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, under pressure due to poor domestic form, expressed optimism ahead of his team’s Champions League match against modest Bologna on Tuesday, despite their weak Bundesliga record.
Dortmund lost 2-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, marking their third consecutive defeat in the Bundesliga. The team now sits 10th with 25 points, seven points away from the top four and 20 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
However, Sahin said he is looking forward to facing Bologna. Dortmund currently ranks ninth in the Champions League group stage standings, just one point behind the top eight, which secure direct qualification to the knockout stage.
“The Champions League cannot be compared to the Bundesliga. Our stars perform much better here, and we hope to secure a win on Tuesday to take a big step toward the Round of 16,” Sahin stated.
Dortmund has 12 points after six matches, one point behind Lille, which faces group leaders Liverpool on Tuesday. Bologna, yet to secure a win, sits in 33rd place among 36 teams with just two points.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sahin acknowledged the recent string of defeats but emphasized that he feels no personal pressure. “Of course, this affects everyone, but I don’t feel any pressure at all. We all need to perform better. This affects me personally, but I’m fine. I’m really looking forward to the game and feel confident. We want to make a giant leap while building momentum for the Bundesliga as well.”
Despite increasing criticism, the coach stood by his players and took full responsibility for the team’s performance.
“I’ve never been disappointed with my players. I’m the coach, and I need to lead the way. Everyone knows we have more work to do. We all trust their abilities and know what we want to achieve tomorrow,” the 36-year-old coach concluded.
