Sudan Events – Agencies

The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, stated that the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the recent escalation in the fighting in Sudan, particularly around the Jili oil refinery north of Khartoum, and in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur.

Guterres urged all parties to refrain from actions that could have serious consequences for Sudan and the region, including dangerous economic and environmental impacts. He reminded them of their obligations under international law, including those related to the protection of civilians, civil infrastructure, and facilitating humanitarian access.

In a statement from his spokesperson on Friday, Guterres said that Sudanese women, children, and men are paying the price for the continuation of offensive operations by the combatants. He reiterated his call for urgent and genuine dialogue between the parties to the conflict, aiming for an immediate ceasefire to spare Sudanese civilians from further harm. He stressed that a permanent solution to the conflict can only be achieved through an inclusive political process.

The statement also noted that the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, continues to engage with the parties and all concerned parties to calm the conflict and promote an inclusive dialogue, led by Sudanese leadership, to bring an end to the war.
