Sudan participated on Wednesday in the 109th session of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), held in The Hague. The council’s agenda included discussions on recent U.S. allegations concerning the use of chemical weapons in Sudan, following requests for clarification received by the OPCW from several member states.
Sudan’s delegation delivered a statement expressing the government’s firm stance on the Chemical Weapons Convention, which it considers an integral part of its national legal framework. The statement reaffirmed Sudan’s absolute and principled rejection of the use of chemical weapons and its full commitment to international obligations in this regard.
The delegation emphasized that the Sudanese government takes these allegations seriously and is addressing them transparently and responsibly. It has already begun implementing practical steps, including forming a national committee comprising representatives of relevant institutions to investigate the matter as soon as the necessary technical information is received.
The statement stressed that addressing such allegations objectively requires access to the information on which the claims are based. The Sudanese government is currently working through technical communication channels with the U.S. side, which has expressed willingness to provide the necessary data and details in the coming period.
Sudan’s delegation called on the Executive Council to allow this process to continue in a spirit of constructive cooperation.
Sudan reaffirmed its full commitment to the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention and its readiness to cooperate with the OPCW and all member states in support of international efforts to prevent the proliferation and use of chemical weapons and to enhance regional and international peace and security.
