Ethiopia Denies Moving Troops to Sudanese Border

A spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday denied that Ethiopian forces had been deployed toward the disputed Al-Fashaga border area with Sudan, affirming that the country’s army is not conducting any activity there.

Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry’s headquarters, spokesperson Nebiat Getachew reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to a policy of good neighborliness and non-escalation. He stressed that Ethiopia’s relationships with neighboring countries are based on the principles of mutual respect and shared benefit.

In a separate context, Getachew stated that Ethiopia had adopted a quiet diplomacy approach that prevented the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue from being placed on the United Nations Security Council’s agenda.

He emphasized that Ethiopia had countered what he described as “false propaganda” promoted by Egypt regarding the dam’s threat, announcing that the dam will be officially inaugurated in September.

At the same time, Getachew called for the dam project to become a point of cooperation rather than conflict between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.

He noted that Ethiopia remains committed to dialogue and collaboration with the three countries, and believes the GERD will not cause any harm, but rather could serve as a model for regional integration and development.
