The Sudanese army carried out a successful airdrop operation for the 6th Infantry Division in El Fasher, North Darfur, on Monday—its first such mission in nearly five months.
Military sources told Sudan Tribune that an air force cargo plane dropped supplies early in the morning for the division’s command in El Fasher. The supplies included ammunition, medicine, significant quantities of food, and cash.
Eyewitnesses in El Fasher reported that an Antonov cargo aircraft circled over the North Darfur capital for more than half an hour before releasing its cargo and leaving the city’s airspace without encountering fire from the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) air defenses.
New details have since emerged about the operation, which was hailed as a success. Witnesses said the plane’s appearance turned into a celebratory scene, with ululations from civilians and bursts of gunfire from soldiers marking the moment.
According to the information, the airdrop was made possible after the destruction of three RSF air defense systems around El Fasher: one reportedly brought in days earlier from Chad, another located east of the city at kilometer 23 on the national highway at a former rest stop for road and bridge workers, and a third in the Jaqo Jaqo area.
