Committee for Facilitating Citizens’ Return to Khartoum Calls for Accelerating Restoration of Services

The Higher Committee for Preparing a Suitable Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State held a meeting on Saturday chaired by Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris.

The meeting reviewed a report presented by Khartoum Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza on the rehabilitation of the water sector and efforts to address the consequences of water outages affecting some neighborhoods in Khartoum.

The meeting also heard a detailed report from the Director General of Sudan Electricity, Engineer Abdullah Mohamed Ali, regarding the rehabilitation of the electricity sector and arrangements to address the impacts of electricity outages in some neighborhoods of Khartoum State. The report discussed the emergency plan extending through the end of 2026, including measures to address power interruptions through the addition of more generating units, resolving distribution issues, installing additional transformers, maintaining and installing more than 1,100 transformers in the capital, and continuing efforts to restore electricity to several sites in Khartoum.

Minister of Culture, Information, Antiquities, and Tourism Khalid Al-Aiser stated in a press briefing that the meeting also discussed the rehabilitation of major roads and bridges. He referred to the comprehensive report presented by Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Seif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun concerning efforts to rehabilitate major roads and bridges, including the Halfaya, Mak Nimir, and Shambat bridges.

In this regard, Al-Aiser gave good news to the Sudanese people and residents of the capital, announcing that tenders would be launched next week with full transparency to ensure that maintenance work proceeds properly through qualified companies.

He added that the meeting also received a briefing from the Water Sector Rehabilitation Committee, presented by the Director of the Khartoum State Water Authority, Engineer Mohamed Ahmed Awad, on the committee’s efforts to expand the water network across the capital and address obstacles hindering its work.

Al-Aiser stated that the meeting commended the efforts made by the committees during the past period and pledged to remove all obstacles to ensure continuity of work and provide the necessary support and resources. He noted that the Prime Minister’s Office had promised to support all concerned committees by providing the required resources to enable them to carry out their tasks swiftly.

He added that members of the Higher Committee agreed on the necessity of accelerating procedures for restoring services to the national capital, Khartoum.
