Gold Exporters Demand Establishment of Gold Refinery in Production Areas

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

Media Secretary of the Goldsmiths and Gold Exporters Division, Atef Ahmed, stressed the importance of economic cooperation with Qatar, indicating that there is nothing preventing an economic partnership with regard to gold with Qatar. Atef affirmed their support for establishing a gold refinery in partnership with Qatar, but he expressed his reservations about establishing a refinery for Sudanese raw gold outside Sudan, pointing out that refineries are always established in the production areas of Port Sudan, Atbara or Kassala, and justified their refusal to establish a refinery to export Sudanese raw gold outside Sudan because it entails a high cost, pointing out that all countries producing oil and gold are establishing refineries.
Atef said, “During his meeting with his Qatari counterpart, the Sudanese Minister of Trade was required to agree to facilitate procedures and establish a modern gold refinery in production areas.” The Ministers of Trade of the two countries demanded facilitating gold export procedures and paving the way for bank transfers.
