The Spanish Football Players Association issued an official statement in response to the penalties imposed on the Matador duo Rodrigo Hernandez and Alvaro Morata by the European Football Association “UEFA” due to their chants referring to Gibraltar during the celebration of the European Nations Cup “Euro 2024”. The statement of the Spanish Football Players Association was as follows: “After learning of the one-match suspension by UEFA for Alvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernandez, the Spanish Football Players Association condemns this arbitrary and unfair decision against two workers.” The Players Association recognizes that the European Union has seriously attacked the right to freedom of expression of both football players, who sang outside their workplace “Spanish Gibraltar” during the celebration ceremony after Spain won the European Nations Championship 2024. In view of this serious decision, the association will send letters to the European Union and to the Spanish office of the International Labor Organization, aware that the rights of two workers, Alvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernández, have clearly been violated. Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union states that “everyone has the right to freedom of expression”. This right includes freedom of opinion and freedom to receive or impart information or ideas without interference by public authorities and regardless of frontiers.’The Spanish Players’ Association will also address the International Labour Organization, arguing that UEFA’s disciplinary regulations violate fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression, not only as workers, but also as citizens.
