Sudan Briefs UN Security Council Experts on Militia Violations in Darfur

A Sudanese governmental committee and a team of United Nations Security Council experts met on Sunday to discuss violations by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in the Darfur region.
The UN Security Council’s expert team arrived in Port Sudan for a three-day visit, marking their first visit since the outbreak of the conflict. During this visit, the team is scheduled to meet with national institutions concerned with implementing Resolution 1591, which enforces an arms embargo on Darfur.
The National Coordination Office for monitoring the implementation of Resolution 1591, which falls under the High Committee for Coordination with the UN and is chaired by Sovereign Council member and Assistant Army Commander Ibrahim Jaber, held discussions with the Security Council experts.
The head of the Coordination Office, retired Major General Ezz Al-Din Othman Taha, stated in a press briefing that they briefed the team on “the extent of violations and assaults committed by the RSF militia against civilians in Darfur and several other Sudanese states.”
He explained that the visiting team was updated on the current situation in Sudan and Sudan’s efforts to achieve peace. He also welcomed the visit and expressed readiness to provide all necessary support to facilitate the experts’ mission.
