Does the Spread of Giant Snakes in the Nile River in Sudan Signal an Imminent Disaster?

Sudan Events – Agencies
In a sudden and terrifying turn, the Nile River in Sudan has begun to reveal its more brutal side, with giant snakes becoming part of the daily scene in the waters, sparking panic and astonishment. These creatures, once a rare part of the wilderness, have now become permanent guests on the shores, particularly the African Rock Python, which has become the subject of widespread discussion, especially whenever someone falls prey to one of these frightening creatures.
Are we witnessing the beginning of a series of natural phenomena that threaten our lives? Or are these snakes simply transient visitors, arriving in a moment of environmental chaos?
Unprecedented Catch… Giant Creatures in the Nile Waters
In the Nile River State, a fisherman encountered an unexpected surprise: he caught a giant python measuring 22 meters in length on Nagzo Island, south of the city of Atbara, about 100 kilometers from Khartoum, near the Sixth Cataract of the Nile. But the astonishing surprise wasn’t just the snake’s length; the fisherman himself managed to catch seven giant snakes in just one week, five of them in a single net.
This strange event raises questions about a phenomenon that could be the first sign of an unprecedented environmental event. The fisherman stated: “The nets were packed with amounts I couldn’t believe. The movement inside them was like a recurring nightmare, happening every day.” Despite the simplicity of the words, there are unspoken warnings about what might follow this terrifying scene.
What Explains This Unnatural Spread?
The series of incidents has raised many questions about the reasons behind the spread of these giant snakes in the Nile River. “Al Arabiya.net” contacted Dr. Sara Said, director of the Sudan Natural History Museum, who provided scientific explanations for this frightening phenomenon.
The Environment in a Dangerous Transformation
Dr. Sara confirmed to “Al Arabiya.net” that the snakes we see today are African Rock Pythons, which are naturally present in Sudan’s environment. However, she pointed out that recent environmental changes due to wars, displacement, and urban expansion have caused these creatures to migrate from their original habitats. She explained: “They do not pose an immediate environmental threat, but the surrounding conditions might make them interact more with humans.” She added, “Human activities such as urban expansion and overhunting weaken natural habitats, increasing the chances of these snakes entering populated areas.”
Are They Intruders?
Dr. Sara added that these snakes are not guests coming from distant places, but are part of the local ecosystem: “These snakes are part of their original environment, but humans have intruded into their habitats, which has increased the confrontations between wildlife and humans.”
Flooding… The Major Carrier
Regarding their relationship with the flood season, Dr. Sara said these snakes migrate in search of dry areas after the flood alters their environment. She explained that while giant snakes are not venomous in themselves, they can be deadly if they attack unexpectedly, as their bite may introduce harmful bacteria. If they coil around the neck, they can cause fatal fractures. Despite not being venomous, their wild nature makes them a real threat.
What About Eating Children?
Dr. Sara sounded the alarm about the ability of these snakes to swallow children or small animals like sheep: “These snakes can swallow large creatures, so there needs to be full awareness of their dangers.”
A 22-Meter Python… A Record Requiring Scientific Study
Dr. Sara Said told “Al Arabiya.net” two days ago that the fisherman from Nagzo Island spoke about catching a giant python measuring 22 meters, and sent photos documenting the incident, as he specializes in collecting pythons. While this size is unusual (the typical length ranges from 5 to 6 meters and can reach 8 meters in rare cases), 22 meters seems hard to believe. However, I do not rule out the truth of his account, as he is known in his field. Nonetheless, a precise scientific verification of this number is necessary. If confirmed, it will be a record that requires in-depth scientific study.
Is There a Connection Between the Python and the Anaconda?
Regarding the similarity with the famous anaconda in the Amazon rainforest, Dr. Sara denied any relation between the python and the anaconda, confirming that the anaconda belongs to the “boa” family, while the python belongs to the “python” family, so they are completely different species with distinct structures and behaviors.
Environmental Warning
While Sudan is experiencing moments of terror due to the spread of giant snakes in the Nile River, the only answer to the causes of this phenomenon lies in the severe environmental changes the country is witnessing. This phenomenon should be an urgent call to pay attention to the environmental consequences of urban expansion and wars, and to work on protecting wildlife, which is part of our natural heritage.
