Minister of Minerals: Addressing Mineral Smuggling Requires More Than Security Solutions

Minister of Minerals, Nour Al-Daem Taha, affirmed that his ministry is moving forward with implementing a strategic vision aimed at expanding and modernizing mineral exploration operations, in a way that strengthens the sector’s contribution as a key driver of the national economy.
This came during his meeting with a number of journalists and newspaper editors at his office, in the presence of the Director General of the Geological Research Authority, Ahmed Haroun Al-Toum, and the Director General of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Mohamed Taher Omar. The meeting featured what he described as a productive and constructive discussion on mining issues in the country.
The minister explained that the vision is based on diversifying mineral resources and making optimal use of Sudan’s vast potential, noting that the country holds an advanced position regionally and ranks third in Africa in this sector.
He pointed out that traditional mining represents one of the most prominent challenges, revealing that a strategy is being prepared to regulate and develop it in a way that ensures sustainability and maximizes economic returns.
Regarding mineral smuggling, Taha stressed that addressing it requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond security solutions to include policy reforms, incentives for exporters, and the provision of banking facilities that support exports and contribute to strengthening the national economy.
