Sudan Calls on UNISFA to Investigate Attack on a Market in Abyei

On Saturday, Khair Abu Mureidat, head of Sudan’s side of the Abyei Area Joint Oversight Committee, called on the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to investigate the attack on Naam Market and identify those responsible.

In a press statement, Abu Mureidat said he was “calling on UNISFA to conduct an urgent and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack on Naam Market and identify those responsible, ensuring accountability and that those involved do not escape punishment.”

He expressed regret over the attack and the civilian casualties, stressing that protecting civilian lives and safeguarding their security and safety were a fundamental priority and responsibility.

He noted that Sudan was serious about fulfilling its responsibilities to protect its citizens and shield the area’s residents from the dangers of war and armed attacks.

Abu Mureidat stressed the need for firm action against armed groups operating outside state authority and mercenaries competing for influence within and around the Abyei Area.

He explained that leniency toward such armed elements had contributed to creating an unstable security environment, increasing the likelihood of incidents of this kind. He said this made serious and effective measures necessary to prevent their recurrence and protect civilians.

Abu Mureidat reiterated Sudan’s commitment to its international obligations and the agreements signed concerning the Abyei Area, as well as its respect for international resolutions aimed at maintaining the area’s security and stability.

He said achieving stability in Abyei required responsible cooperation, practical commitment to existing agreements, and joint efforts to protect civilians, safeguard the area’s security, and shield its residents from the consequences of war.
