Panama’s Top Scorer Dies During Veterans’ Match

The Panama Football Federation announced that former national team striker Luis Tejada, who represented his country in more than 100 international matches, died on the field last Sunday at the age of 41.

Local media reported that Tejada was participating in a match for the veteran stars on the outskirts of Panama City and suddenly fell to the ground to ask for a change. When he left the field, he fainted before being taken to a clinic to receive medical care, but he died there.

The Panama Football Association mourned Tejada, who played a prominent role in helping the national team qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in the 2018 edition.

The federation said in a post on the “X” social media platform: “He was associated with development and football in our country. Our sincere condolences. We will never forget you, Matador.”

Luis Tejada was nicknamed “Matador” because of his ability to score goals. Outside of Panama, Tejada played for America de Cali in Colombia and Toluca in Mexico.

Tejada played 108 international matches and is the national team’s top scorer with 43 goals.
