Runner Chebet Breaks Her Own World Record in the 5000m

Beatrice Chebet, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, broke the world record for the women’s 5000m at the Cross de las Naciones road race in Barcelona, with a time of 13 minutes and 54 seconds on Tuesday, marking a fantastic end to the year.
The 24-year-old Kenyan runner surpassed her own previous world record set a year ago at the Barcelona race by 19 seconds, becoming the first woman to complete the race in under 14 minutes.
This achievement crowns an incredible year for Chebet, who won gold in both the 5000m and 10000m events at the Paris Olympics.
Chebet said in remarks quoted by the International Association of Athletics Federations: “I am so happy that everything went according to plan. I felt that I could finish the race in under 14 minutes, and I managed to do so. Two races in Barcelona and two world records—what more could I ask for?”
She also broke the world record for the 10000m in Eugene last May before securing her second 5000m Diamond League title.
Chebet stated that her focus is now shifting to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, where she will compete in both the 5000m and 10000m events, after winning silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023 in the 5000m race.
