Justice and Equality Movement: Sanctions Against Gibril Part of Conspiracy Against Sudan

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) criticized US Treasury sanctions imposed on its leader, Dr. Gibril Ibrahim, describing them as part of a series of external conspiracies against Sudan and as explicit support for a criminal militia previously condemned by the US State Department and UN organizations for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

JEM spokesperson Muhammad Zakaria called the sanctions “a desperate attempt to rescue a militia on the verge of collapse,” asserting that the group is committed to democratic transition, integration of its forces into the Sudanese army, and protection of Sudanese citizens’ dignity.

The statement also rejected claims linking Gibril Ibrahim’s official activities, including diplomatic visits to Iran, to US allegations, emphasizing that such visits are part of his constitutional duties as Sudan’s finance minister. The movement denounced unilateral sanctions as legally unfounded and urged the international community to lift the siege on Al-Fashir and support comprehensive peace efforts.
